Drying Blueberries

Maine is right in its peak for blueberry season. They are everywhere this year, from the u-picks to the local farm stands. Even grocery stores have been offering rock bottom prices for a few weeks now. This is the time to stock up. We all know how it goes when the snow begins to fall, a half pint at the local grocer will likely run you $5-6. Who really buys them for that price anyway? If only there was an easy way to capitalize when the pickings are good and have blueberries year round. Fortunately there are countless ways of preserving blueberries that don’t take too much time or effort. Freezing is often a popular choice, but not very versatile. They work great in baked goods and smoothies, but defrosted blueberries are too mushy for much else.  A great alternative is drying blueberries. They taste great, store well, and can be used in a variety of ways. These make an excellent school snack choice. Here is the basic way to get it done!

  • Set oven to lowest possible temp. Mine is 170 degrees.
  • Line cookie sheet with wax paper to prevent sticking.
  • Wash blueberries well, and remove stems, leaves etc.
  • Spread the blueberries one layer thick over pan.
  • Bake in oven for 6-10 hours until the blueberries resemble raisins & are leathery. (time varies with blueberry sizes)
  • Store in bags or jars in a cool, dry place. In ideal conditions they can last up to a year.

There is no end to the possibilities with this delicious berry! Cook them in your favorite recipes, sprinkle on salads, or just eat them plain. So go pick some up cheap, before its too late!

Green Review: Seventh Generation Training Pants

This weeks "green" product is Seventh Generation brand training pants. Average retail price $11.99 for a 25-29 count package. They can be purchased at your local  whole foods, or Amazon. I highly recommend these! Though my daughter is potty trained, we still have her wear training pants at night. Seventh Generation training pants are super durable, much like real cloth. They also have excellent absorbency.

I have noticed when buying some of the generic brand training pants, they often rip and have a strong odor if the child has an accident. Seventh Generation training pants has neither of these issues. Most training pants are in this same price range, but do not offer any environmental or health benefits.

Product features include:
  • Wood pulp processed without chemicals containing chlorine
  • Soft, cloth-like comfort
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Stretchy, tear-away side panels for better fit and convenience
  • Inner leak barriers for superior leakage protection
  • Fragrance and latex free
The only down-side to these is that they lack the colorful cartoon designs like on other brands. My daughter was a bit disappointed when she realized there were no princesses on them. For fun,  I let her take markers to them and design her own.

Homemade Fairy Wings

This is a fun project to make a little girls costume fairy wings. The best part is that you probably already have all the items needed on hand. It only takes 15-20 minutes and will make your little fairy very happy.

see!
1.Supplies needed: 2 wire coat hangers, tape, tights, items to decorate (glitter, markers, ribbon, etc.)
    2. Remove the curved parts of both hangers. This may require snips for heavy duty hangers. The cheaper kinds will just snap with a bit of twisting and bending.
3.Tape ends of both hangers together tightly.
      4. Bend and shape the hangers to resemble wing shapes.

      5. Cut tights at the tops of each leg. Cut a 4 inch strip from the top of each leg for the straps.

6.Wrap each side of wing with one leg piece of tight. Pull tight to get out wrinkles, and tie a knot at the center.
7.Work each of the strap pieces over the wings to the center.

      8. Now its time to decorate. Add beads, glitter, flowers, whatever you want! You could even color with markers and make "butterfly wings" instead.
      Have fun!
